Microsoft releases Office Mobile for Android phones (tablets need not apply)

Microsoft releases Office Mobile for Android phones (tablets need not apply)

    Senior Editor, PCWorld

      Jul 31, 2013 6:00 AM

Microsoft Wednesday added Android to the list of mobile operating systems now supported by Office Mobile. But Office Mobile for Android only covers phones, not tablets, limiting its utility.

The Android version, Office Mobile for Android , is also arguably the weakest of the bunch, in terms of compatibility with Microsoft Office. Microsoft is still tacitly encouraging users to buy Windows Phones, which come preloaded and activated with Windows Mobile and don’t require an Office 365 subscription to use. The problem is, within the Android world, there are a number of other office solutions that provide very good direct competition to Microsoft’s offering.

Nevertheless, Office Mobile for Android is free and downloadable from the Google Play Store. The only requirement is that your phone must contain Android 4.0 or higher, and you must already have purchased Office 365.

In a break with Office Mobile for iPhone. Microsoft doesn’t even offer the option to purchase Office 365 from within the app; instead, users must sign up outside the application itself. And without Office 365, Office Mobile for Android is virtually useless.

“The release of this app shows that we’re committed to keep providing additional value for Office 365 subscribers,” said Guy Gilbert, a senior product manager of the Office apps for Microsoft, in a blog post.

Qualifying Office 365 plans include Office 365 Home Premium, Office 365 Small Business Premium, Office 365 Midsize Business, Office 365 Enterprise E3 and E4, Office 365 Education A3 and A4, Office 365 ProPlus, and Office 365 University.

There are also Office 365 government plans that include Office Mobile. Users can also visit Office.com and sign up for a free 30-day trial, Microsoft said.

While Microsoft eventually intends to make Office Mobile for Android available across 33 languages and in 117 markets, it’s only currently available for the United States. That will change over the next few weeks, Microsoft said.

    What’s included

Like Office Mobile for iPhone, the Android version comes with mobile versions of Excel, PowerPoint, and Word; Office Mobile for Windows Phone adds OneNote as well. So far, Android users don’t have access to the Outlook Web App app that Microsoft recently released for the iPhone. either.

Users can create new documents, edit those that they’ve already created, and save, load, or edit files saved to Microsoft’s SkyDrive or SkyDrive Pro—which on Tuesday received a few upgrades. as well.

But the ability to create files only applies to Word and Excel; for now, you can review your PowerPoint slides and edit them, but not create a presentation from scratch.

    Users can also open a document via email. Office Mobile includes a couple of handy features designed for the phone;

The software knows what documents you’ve recently accessed on your PC, and those are the first options presented when you choose to open a saved file.

A feature that Microsoft calls Rapid Resume also works like Amazon’s Kindle, ‘fast-forwarding” you to the portion of the document last viewed on your PC.

An “outline view” in Excel and Word allow you to quickly navigate through the document, and both apps allow annotations as well.

Within the three supported apps, Microsoft has made efforts to make editing a snap; in Word (shown at top of story), for example, tapping the pencil brings up the most common editing functions. Excel allows you to filter and sort data and create charts, using the local processor to calculate data.

Within PowerPoint, users can review slides and edit speaker notes, move and hide slides, and make text edits directly from the phone. Holding the phone in a portrait orientation allows edits to be made and includes a quick navigation bar; a landscape orientation serves as presentation mode.

In general, Office Mobile for Android and Office Mobile for iPhone should function quite similarly, with two exceptions: Android users can not sign up for Office 365 within the app itself, and Android users may need to fully qualify documents that are accessed via an on-premise SharePoint server.

    Buy Windows Phone—or a Surface

To date, however, Microsoft has been keenly cognizant that productivity apps are the foundation of the Windows platform, and users who purchase a Windows Phone will have these benefits:

    • Office Mobile will be preinstalled and activated;
    • users will be able to save documents to the phone itself, as well as SkyDrive or email;
    • WP users will be able to filter and search for documents;
    • Users can also easily open documents with permissions attached to them.

Office 365 includes a license of up to five mobile devices—but Windows Phones don’t count against that limit.

The biggest annoyance, however, is that—like the iPad—tablets aren’t supported in either Office Mobile for the iPhone or the Android version, either. Those trying to hunt and peck at keys in the back of a jouncing taxi are likely to grit their teeth and muddle through; by doing so, however, Microsoft is tacitly encouraging customers in the direction of a Surface tablet—now at a new low, low, price—or even a full-fledged Windows 8 PC. (“Phablets” like the Samsung Galaxy Note II should still be supported, however.)

“If you have an iPad or Android tablet, we recommend using the Office Web Apps. which provide the best Office experience on a tablet,” a spokeswoman for Microsoft said via email. “We have made lots of enhancements to Office Web Apps including a touch experience for tablet users.”

QuickOffice Pro provides one tablet-friendly alternative to Office Mobile for Android.

Microsoft also has native apps for OneNote. Lync. and SharePoint. in addition to supporting Exchange Active Sync for email, calendar and contacts, she said.

”I’m not sure how many people are going to want to do a lot of Office work on a phone,” Michael Silver, an analyst at Gartner, said recently. “A tablet’s going to be a lot more important.”

    Alternatives

Of course, there’s no reason that users have to live in the world that Microsoft has created. Plenty of Android office apps allow document creation or editing, both on a phone or tablet: Google Drive. of course, allows for Google’s own documents to be created; and Google’s own QuickOffice. Documents to Go. and OfficeSuite Pro 7  are all arguably as good or better choices than Microsoft’s offerings.

In one way, editing or creating an Office document on a mobile phone is counter-intuitive; too many people still append some sort of signature file on a mobile phone to explain away any typos or shorthand.

Within a business document, however, typos simply shouldn’t appear. Office Mobile can certainly stand in to enable last-minute changes while on the go, but they shouldn’t be considered as serious tools for document creation. And that’s exactly how Microsoft appears to want it.

Best office apps for Android, round 3

Microsoft's Office apps are finally available for Android smartphones and tablets. Here’s how they stack up against past favorites

    Getting serious about mobile productivity

We live in an increasingly mobile world -- and while many of us spend our days working on traditional desktops or laptops, we also frequently find ourselves on the road and relying on tablets or smartphones to stay connected and get work done.

So where do you turn when it's time for serious productivity on an Android device? The Google Play Store boasts several popular office suite options; at a glance, they all look fairly comparable. But don't be fooled: All Android office apps are not created equal.

I've spent many hours testing and revisiting the six most noteworthy Android office suites -- DataViz's Docs to Go; Google's Docs, Sheets, and Slides; Infraware's Polaris Office; Kingsoft's WPS Mobile Office; MobiSystems' OfficeSuite 8; and Microsoft's Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, which finally became available for both phones and tablets in June -- to see where they shine and where they fall short. I looked at how each suite handles word processing, spreadsheet editing, and presentation editing -- both in terms of the features offered and regarding user interface and experience. I took both tablet and smartphone performance into consideration.

Click through for a detailed analysis; by the time you're done, you'll have a crystal-clear idea of which Android office suite is right for you.

Best Android word processor: OfficeSuite 8 Premium

MobiSystems' OfficeSuite 8 offers a desktop-class word processing experience that no competitor -- even with Microsoft in the fray -- can match. The UI is clean, easy to use, and intelligently designed to expand to a tablet-optimized setup. Its robust set of editing tools is organized into easily accessible on-screen tabs on a tablet (and condensed into drop-down menus on a phone). OfficeSuite 8 provides practically everything you need, from basic formatting to advanced table creation and manipulation utilities. You can insert images, shapes, and freehand drawings; add and view comments; track, accept, and reject changes; spell-check; and calculate word counts. There's even a native PDF markup utility, PDF export, and the ability to print to a cloud-connected printer.

OfficeSuite 8 works with locally stored Word-formatted files and connects directly to a wide range of cloud storage services -- Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, SugarSync, OneDrive, and Amazon Cloud Drive -- enabling you to view and edit documents without having to download or manually sync your work.

The only real downside to OfficeSuite 8 is its pricing model and convoluted sales approach. Search the Play Store, and you'll find three separate offerings from MobiSystems: a free app, OfficeSuite 8 + PDF Converter ; a $14.99 app, OfficeSuite 8 Pro + PDF ; and another free app, OfficeSuite 8 Pro (Trial). The company also sells a dizzying array of add-ons that range in price from free to $30.

But wait -- it gets even more complex: The top-of-the-line OfficeSuite 8 version reviewed here is accessible only by downloading the free OfficeSuite 8 + PDF Converter app, then following the link on the app's main screen to upgrade to the Premium level. That gives you the most fully featured setup available -- but it now requires an ongoing $19.99 yearly subscription to maintain (a change from when we last reviewed the product earlier this year). Regardless of the app's quality, a recurring cost may be a tough pill to swallow -- especially if you don't have an expense account to lean on.

The best choice without a recurring fee is the $14.99 OfficeSuite 8 Pro version. That app is identical to the Premium app in UI and provides most of the same core features, with two noteworthy exceptions: a robust spell-check function (the Pro version's editor will identify misspelled words inline but not offer suggestions) and support for a full range of standard fonts. (The Premium app does have a few other additional features, like an integrated photo editor, PDF scanner, and custom predictive keyboard, but those elements aren't related to the core office experience and can easily be found in other third-party apps.)

To add those two noted omissions to the Pro version -- you'll probably want to get the fonts, at the least -- you'll need to pay $9.99 apiece for MobiSystems' QuickSpell and Font Pack add-ons, which integrate with the app and fill the respective voids. Adding both elements to the Pro version would bring your grand total to a one-time payment of $34.97 -- which, while not inexpensive, may be a better value than the Premium app's $20 annual recurring fee for most users. Adding even one of those two extra elements would bring the total to $24.98, which is reasonable for what Pro offers.

    App: OfficeSuite 8 Premium

Price: $19.99 per year (via in-app upgrade)

    Developer: MobiSystems

Runner-up Android word processor: Microsoft Word

Microsoft's Word app for Android is full of functionality but at times lacks finesse. On the tablet front, Word provides an interface that'll be familiar to anyone who's used Microsoft's office suite on other platforms -- and while it isn't quite as intuitive or native-feeling to Android as OfficeSuite 8, it's easy enough to figure out. (Some of the more problematic UI issues I identified in my initial review of the app have been rectified with recent updates.)

On the phone front, however, Microsoft falters. In its attempt to scale the app to a smaller screen, Microsoft has created a UI that's clumsy and awkward in real-world use. Most commands are hidden behind a single editing icon at the top of the screen; tapping that icon brings up a bizarre bottom-of-screen panel that takes up half the interface, thus leaving you with little room to see your actual document. You also can't use your on-screen keyboard while the editing panel is open, which is plain strange.

Interface aside, Word lacks advanced features that are present in other word processors, like real-time collaboration (which, curiously, is a core feature of Microsoft's main Office 365 product) along with automatic saving, the ability to handle PDFs and other alternate file formats, and password protection -- and it requires an ongoing monthly subscription if you want access to certain basic features like inserting page breaks or tracking and reviewing changes. Microsoft's app is also limited in its cloud connectivity options, with OneDrive and Dropbox as the only choices available.

For many users, though, the familiarity of Microsoft's software will serve as a strong advantage -- and those who already subscribe to Office 365 in particular may be won over by the relatively consistent experience across platforms. Even with its drawbacks and limitations, Word for Android is a contender worth considering.

Android 4.4 KitKat

По поводу последнего пункта: к сожалению, ни в более ранних версиях операционной системы Google Android, ни в самой свежей на сегодня – Android 5.0 Lolipop тестовая версия Microsoft Office у вас не запустится.

Microsoft Office for Android Tablet Review

    A New Focus

From its inception, Office was a group of PC applications designed to be used with a mouse and cursor, which allowed on-screen buttons to be quite small. The rise of tablets that are controlled with a fingertip required larger screen elements.

To its credit, Microsoft went into the redesign with a surprising amount of open-mindedness. It released a touch-friendly version of Office for iPad last year, and now follows up with the Android version before the Windows version has been introduced. This is part of a strategy to keep Word, Excel, and PowerPoint relevant in the business world, even though iOS and Android tablets are currently more popular than Windows-powered ones.

The main effect of this is that these apps will soon look and act the same no matter what OS is running it; if you have tried Office for iPad then you’re already seen the new layout for Android.

And the Windows versions will have the same look and operation. This is important because it shows that the Android and iPad versions of Office aren’t stripped-down “lite” editions. They are the full ones.

The other side of the coin is that this new version doesn’t add any features. The old features have just be rearranged and brought to a new platform.

    Ribbon Toolbar

Long-time users of the Windows version of Office shouldn’t be dismayed by the touch-friendly version. The design for Android Tablets still features the ribbon toolbar that has long been a part of Office, but it has been simplified so that only the most-used features are presented to the user, reducing what can sometimes seem an overwhelming array of controls in earlier versions.

The advantage is a cleaner look, with enough room between on-screen elements that it’s easy for a fingertip to hit just the desired one. And the more obscure features haven’t been deleted – their controls have been moved to windows that pop up when an icon is tapped.

    Microsoft Word for Android Tablet

Office has always used this arrangement; the new version of this software just uses it a lot more. Previously, Microsoft tried to reduce the amount of clicking required by squeezing as many control elements directly in the ribbon toolbar as possible. That bit of convenience is not possible in the fingertip-friendly apps.

There are other simplifications that reduce redundancy. For example, in Word for Windows 2013, selecting text with a mouse brings up a very complicated pop-up filled with tiny formatting controls that are duplicates of ones in the ribbon bar. The Android version has a simple pop-up with just cut, copy, and paste, as formatting is always done with the ribbon bar.

    Android = Windows: Almost

The Office applications developed for Android tablet don’t look 100% like their iPad counterparts, but they are actually arranged more like the upcoming touch-friendly Windows versions than the iOS one. For example, both of these have a File menu in the Ribbon, something Apple apparently required Microsoft to come up with an alternative for.

    Microsoft Excel for Android Tablet

This doesn’t affect the usefulness of any version, and all three are nearly identical to the point that switching back and forth from one to another isn’t confusing.

    Using Office in an Office

Many of those who will use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for Android will be doing so in a mixed-device environment where they will be sharing files with others using Windows and iOS, so it is important that when a file is edited on an Android tablet, the only things changed in the file are the edits.

In our tests, this new software handles this process seamlessly. A document was exchanged multiple times between Word running on Windows, iOS, and Android without any issues.

This process was handled with Microsoft’s OneDrive, which is integrated into Office, no matter the platform.

    Conclusion

The release of full versions of Microsoft Word. Excel. and PowerPoint for Android tablets is a huge step forward for anyone who wants to replace their laptop with a more mobile computer. Almost gone are the days when Android tablet users should feel any need to apologize for not choosing a Windows device, because for many workgroups it simply won’t matter what type of tablet is someone is using, because they can run Office.

That said, anyone contemplating buying an Android tablet to run Office on it should check that it will meet their needs before they put their money down.

One final issue to be aware of is that this version of Office is for tablets, and can’t be loaded onto a phone, or even a phablet with a 6-inch screen – the display needs to be at least 7 inches in size. Those with smaller models must use Microsoft Office Mobile.

BGR Says Microsoft Is Working On Office For Android Tablets Due Out In November, We Hope It's True

You know that guy "sources"? BGR does. The tech blog has heard from Sources that Microsoft is working on a tablet-optimized version of the Office suite, which is expected to land in November of this year. According to BGR, their source actually saw the app working on an iPad, and insisted it looked nearly identical to a leaked shot that Microsoft has since disavowed.

To be clear, Microsoft has said that the above image is fake. Of course, while more often than not, companies simply decline to comment on rumors, it's not entirely outside the realm of possibility that Microsoft has denied the authenticity of the image solely to throw the media off the scent. More likely, though, is that Office simply looks similar because, let's face it, Metro has a pretty easy-to-simulate design language.

If it's true that the above image is fake, there's not much new information that we can safely rely on that we couldn't have assumed before. It's reasonable to believe Microsoft is working on a version of Office for tablets. It's not a market segment the company can afford to ignore. Also, Windows 8 is already in Consumer Preview and is rumored to be released in late 2012. Since Windows 8 will be the first version to explicitly support tablets, it's not unreasonable that Microsoft would be developing Office for competing platforms while it's working on Office for its own tablet OS.

Then again, maybe none of it's true, maybe Microsoft wants to keep Office a Windows exclusive on tablets to lure customers, and we're merely hearing rumblings of something that will never make it out of Microsoft's labs. With little besides BGR's sources to go on, we can't say for sure. We certainly hope it's true, though. Office on tablets would be a huge step towards making tablets better productivity tools.
